Current Gallery: micro-universe ( piece)
These are images of fluorescent specimens viewed under a microscope. All of the images are representing some component of the brain - neurons, axons, etc. - as this is what I do for a living (study the brain). Of course, they always look more amazing in real life, but, in these images, I try to capture the awe that often overcomes me when viewing them. The microscopes used are of a newer, more modern breed than traditional light microscopes. These use directed laser light to 'excite' fluorescent molecules used to label or highlight specific features of neurons. By using laser light, we can view objects that are very small (up to about one-one-millionth of a meter) with very good resolution.
